From March 17th – 21st, researchers from Europe and beyond met in the beautiful village of Bertinoro for another exciting ELSA event. During the five-day workshop organized by our network members INRIA, the University of Helsinki and CISPA, ELSA members and external speakers came together to network, share their research, and learn from each other.
Our workshop program was packed with presentations and workshops from numerous universities as well as Google DeepMind, Microsoft Research, and INRIA. You can find the entire workshop program here.
The attendees were flabbergasted. Words like “inspiring” and “fantastic” filled the rooms, while they enjoyed the extensive opportunities to discuss and exchange ideas. Coming from various research areas, the participants and speakers brought different perspectives on privacy. This mix facilitated diverse conversations.

Our external speakers and presenters shared the participants’ impressions. They particularly appreciated the intercontinental participation and the open and active nature of the exchange overall.
All in all, the group agreed that the topics covered during the intensive five-day workshop were relevant, with just the correct depth of information and experts on-site to engage in deep, practical conversations. Productivity and participation made the workshop of our Work Package 2 a success.
“Overall, we believe the workshop succeeded very well in its goal of creating a space for deep discussion on important questions on privacy-preserving machine learning among experts. We were delighted to have many leading experts from around the globe to contribute throughout the week. Their active participation created a unique opportunity for junior researchers to engage in extensive discussions with them, get expert feedback on their work, and expand their professional network”, agreed Prof. Dr. Antti Honkela and Dr. Catuscia Palamidessi, the main organisers of the workshop.
A big thank you goes to all organizers, participants and speakers!
